- Arksen give overview on latest pioneering and technical innovations at boot Düsseldorf Boat Show
- Introduction to revolutionary and sustainable initiatives; Arksen Adventure Syndicate, Arksen Explorers Rally powered by PELORUS and 10% for the Ocean campaign
- Partnership announcement with iconic marine brand, Ring Powercraft – forming the Arksen Adventure vessels series
18 January 2020 – boot Düsseldorf, Germany: Arksen took centre stage at boot Düsseldorf Boat Show today as the eco-focused innovation and technology company presented a series of new initiatives, each providing greater access to its range of exceptional explorer vessels. These new revolutionary approaches will help drive Arksen’s aim to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable marine future by uniting like-minded adventurers and families, enabling them to go off-grid and explore the world’s oceans whilst participating in conservation projects and marine research.
New pioneering developments
In addition to the newly launched Arksen Adventure Syndicate an innovative new ownership model offering access to a multi-year cruising program at a significantly lower cost, the company is delighted to unveil details of the brand-new Arksen Explorers Rally powered by PELORUS.
A concept born from two companies’ commitment to ocean conservation, exploration and a desire to expand the horizons of luxury travel. Designed to enable friends and families to explore the world’s wilder lands and oceans, the initial Viking Saga and Middle Seas Rally will take place in 2021. To deliver this series of events, the Arksen and PELORUS team has created an incredible itinerary of life-enhancing experiences and built an inimitable network of adventure professionals.
The Arksen Foundation, a non-profit company that actively contributes to research programs to support the identification of new species as well as the preservation of existing ones, has announced its new lead campaign, 10% for the Ocean. Inspired by its passion for preserving the ocean’s ecosystem, developed from discussions with leading scientists and philanthropists, this campaign is designed to move the needle for ocean conservation funding and set new standards in targeted generosity.
This campaign is a pledge taken by individuals, families and companies to address a global and systemic problem; that less than 1% of all charitable funding goes to supporting ocean-related causes today. Arksen’s aim is to create a scale funding network for ocean science and related causes – to increase the oceans share of funding from 1% to 10%.
All-new Adventure Vessels
Iconic marine brand, Ring Powercraft, has been appointed as the official partner to work alongside Arksen to produce an exceptional range of power vessels, built to accommodate a wide-range of uses; pleasure, adventure, diving, tourism, charter, expeditions and research. The Arksen Adventure vessels are based on Ring Powercraft’s outstanding reputation for producing ground-breaking, high-performance hulls, with exceptional manoeuvrability and rough water handling, which are already utilised in commercial and military markets. In-line with Arksen’s ethos, sustainable approaches and methodologies will be applied to the design and production of these vessels.
The Arksen Adventure vessels will be offered with a range of power and propulsion options to suit different users including outboards, stern drive and water jet propulsion systems, with petrol, diesel and hybrid power plants.
Ring CEO, David Jackson, commented on the partnership:
“We are proud to be working with the Arksen team on this exciting new project to create a range of explorer craft.
“Arksen’s innovative approach, a perfect fit with our strategy on development projects, will deliver a unique British offering in short and medium range adventure boating. Ring’s proven hull designs, which have evolved throughout the brand’s 51-year history, enhance the concept with fuel efficient, soft riding and exceptional rough water handling capabilities. Our experience in the Commercial and Defence sectors will add durability, range and ‘no-fail mission’ features.
“One of the key drivers for us, as we develop our eco-strategy, has been Arksen’s approach to sustainability. This platform will provide the opportunity to research and develop the practical application of eco-friendly bio, sustainable and recyclable materials for marine use, which can then be rolled out to our production processes.
“As we start the year, we look forward to adding ‘Adventure’ to our current Leisure, Commercial and Defence ranges.”
Arksen COO, Ewan Hind, reflected on the company’s recent announcements:
“A year on from company launch and we’re delighted to return to boot Düsseldorf to unveil our line-up of new project developments.
“Arksen has gone from strength to strength, with our technical teams working tirelessly to develop new and existing relationships with partners and suppliers, looking at the full life cycle of each element of the build but ensuring that above all the vessels meet and exceed safety standards so that our clients can explore in exceptionally high levels of comfort.
“In addition to having the first Arksen 85 ready for build early this year, the designers have been finalising the Arksen 70, a model which has proven to be very popular and makes up a large part of the enquiries we receive. The 70 will also be ready to commence build in 2020 alongside the Arksen 85.”

Arksen is ‘One to Watch’ as one of the most innovative and impactful companies of 2019
Arksen is a leading example of an innovative British business that is empowering investors to address a major global challenge whilst seeking competitive returns. In developing a series of semi-autonomous ocean-going vessels that are capable of reaching some of the ocean’s most extreme and challenging environments, Arksen’s mission is to support the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal No.14 “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”.
Just 10 months after launching the company, Arksen has already been recognised for its impact, influence and investor potential by being named ‘One to Watch’ for the ‘UK’s Most Impactful Investment’ at the 2019 Intelligent Partnership Growth Investor Awards.
The success of Arksen to date can be largely attributed to its major funding partner Vala Capital, itself recognised as an ‘Industry Rising Star’ at the Awards and finalist for ‘Industry Game Changer’. Vala is an investment firm led by entrepreneurs that take a long-term view, fully integrating sustainability research and insights into a rigorous framework of traditional financial analysis while aligning incentives with the interests of investors. Indeed, Vala believes that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is key to long-term business growth and that strong sustainability is linked to strong investor returns.
Vala understood that the opportunity to back such a progressive company in Arksen would move the ocean agenda forward and would encourage change throughout the industry whilst creating the opportunity for attractive and sustainable capital returns. Certainly, with an order book for the vessels gathering momentum, this strategy appears to be welcomed by those in the private sector who wish to invest as a tool for change.
Whilst the Arksen vessels are multi-purpose to allow for both leisure and commercial activities to be pursued, the company employs an innovative ownership programme that mandates owners to donate a proportion of time at sea to scientific research. The Arksen Foundation is a non-profit company that actively contributes to research programs to support the identification of new species as well as the preservation of existing ones. Alongside this sits the Arksen Explorers’ Club, which curates off grid expeditions for the Arksen fleet and its owners.
Speaking of becoming the ‘One to Watch’, Arksen Founder Jasper Smith said:
“The marine industry is at a turning point. Traditionally, investors have avoided the sector because it has had limited scale. But with the mobility revolution fully underway, unprecedented demand for access to the oceans and a thriving market for new vessels and new technologies, this environment enables us to create recurring revenue.
“It’s great to be recognised for our vision to ‘do good’ as well as to target attractive financial returns. Sustainability and technology are at the core of the Arksen mission and by reinventing the modern explorer vessel, we are empowering a new generation of sailor, explorer, adventurer and scientist to develop a more profound understanding of our oceans. We expect to operate the world’s largest private fleet of research vessels within a few years.
“This recognition highlights that sustainable business can, and should be, aligned with investor prospects and growth. As we bring our other products on line we hope to offer everyone who is passionate about the ocean the very best tools to access it and in a manner that is consistent with our transition to a low carbon society.”
James Faulkner of Vala Capital said “we are proud to have been recognised for our investment strategy which includes placing a strong emphasis on ESG and sustainable development. Arksen is at the forefront of a revolution in the marine sector and we believe that the company will become a major brand within it over the next few years”.
The Growth Investor Awards enlisted a two-stage judging process ensuring credibility to the esteemed honours. Stage one saw finalists selected under the guidance of an impressive Advisory Board before category winners are chosen by a panel of independent judges.
“The Growth Investor Awards have rightly become a landmark event in the calendars of the UK’s SME investment community. For one evening each year we celebrate the inspiring individuals and leading organisations whose talents and commitment helps UK entrepreneurs to power Britain’s economic growth”, said Guy Tolhurst, Managing Director of Intelligent Partnership.
He continued, “To be awarded the ‘One to Watch’ in such a competitive field of entrants is a huge achievement.”
The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday 6 November 2019 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.

We are delighted to announce that on Monday 18th November at the RAI, Amsterdam, Jasper Smith will open The Superyacht Forum 2019 and inspire over 800 delegates with his invaluable experience as a venture capitalist, investor, technological entrepreneur and advocate of doing things differently with The Arksen Foundation.
In order to build for the next generation, we must seek out role models who have successfully navigated their way through business, to understand the lessons they have learnt along the way, and the ways in which they keep the momentum going when times get tough.
The Superyacht Forum welcomes Arksen founder, Jasper Smith, who will share a personal insight into his career to date, including his motivations to build a new business in the yacht space with sustainability, adventure, and discovery as the project’s DNA. Smith will reveal what he believes is on the horizon for the next generation, as well as what the customers of the future will want from the sea and yachting, and the new type of journey they will be requesting.
“Our mission is to inspire a new generation of explorer, sailor, adventurer and scientist; motivating them to go further, for longer and in support of projects that empower global audiences to better understand, protect and nurture the world’s oceans” – Jasper Smith, Founder – Arksen
SuperyachtNews spoke to Jasper Smith and Ewan Hind (COO – Arksen) about the businesses various updates as we approach and the key goals for the company. “Arksen is a technology and adventure company designing the ultimate marine exploration vessels, with the aim to develop the world’s largest fleet of research capable vessels. Our mission is to inspire a new generation of explorer, sailor, adventurer and scientist; motivating them to go further, for longer and in support of projects that empower global audiences to better understand, protect and nurture the world’s oceans.”
Created out of a deep-rooted commitment to help promote behavioural change in the way that we use and understand the ocean, Arksen places a focus on showing the industry and the world that it is possible to re-think the way we do things, and that holding sustainability and technology at the core of a business is a must if businesses want to be guardians for future generations – a focus that will be explored over the course of the three days at The Superyacht Forum 2019.
When considering our theme for this year’s Forum, Building for the Next Generation, Smith commented, “My children were at the climate protests in London this summer. They, and millions like them around the world, have done a better job at provoking change in the last 12 months than we have done in the last decade. The level of change that we need can only be delivered by governments cooperating unilaterally and globally. But our children are doing a great job at stimulating the debate and communicating. They are a powerful catalyst for change. We should be universally proud of their achievements and rally behind their efforts.
“We feel that owning an Arksen vessel is not a status symbol, but a statement of intent and we are looking to build a like-minded community of owners.” – Jasper Smith, Founder – Arksen

Arksen has today announced its partnership with MarineShift360. The venture, delivering a new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool for the global marine industry, will see a collaboration between multiple businesses contributing valuable data from their materials and design processes to further develop the LCA tool ahead of its commercial release in late 2019.
Sustainability has been at the heart of Arksen’s ethos from the outset and this partnership displays their commitment to drive a new wave of sustainable adventure, research and exploration. By taking a combined approach that not only seeks to create exceptional products, built with their full lifecycle in mind, but also working closely with their community of owners to ensure the fleet is used to inspire a greater understanding of, and have a positive impact on, the ocean ecosystem through the support of projects funded by the Arksen Foundation.
Arksen joins marine industry businesses; Allen Brothers, Emkay Plastics, Multiplast, Princess Yachts, RS Sailing and Wessex Resins as the first seven companies to collaborate on the project.
Motivated by consumer demand and expected changes to legislation, the marine industry is under the spotlight to make advances in closed-loop product design, moving away from the linear ‘take-make-waste’ approach and towards a circular economy. In collaboration with founding sponsor 11th Hour Racing, an international organisation that harnesses the power of sport to innovate change for the health of our oceans, MarineShift360 is actively developing its LCA tool to equip the industry with the means to understand product sustainability.
The LCA tool quantifies the environmental impacts of a product’s full life cycle, from raw materials to disposal, ultimately allowing the user to make informed decisions at the design stage to mitigate such impacts. The pilot partners will work alongside MarineShift360 to tailor the tool to the unique needs of marine businesses in a bid to empower the wider industry to make smart choices within design and manufacturing processes. The project will continue to forge new partnerships to further enhance the performance of the tool, with the vision of creating a tool that is built by the industry, for the industry.
Jasper Smith, CEO of Arksen commented on the partnership: “By reinventing the modern explorer vessel we are inspiring a new generation of sailor and encouraging them to facilitate research that will contribute to a more profound understanding of the ocean ecosystem. Sustainability and deep technology are at the very core of the Arksen business, two fundamentals that we share with MarineShift360, a venture that will empower marine professionals to make informed decisions on materials and design choices through thorough data analysis and owners to make purchase decisions based on product and environmental impact. We are excited to work with the team and to help lead a drive towards sustainable practices across the whole marine sector.”
Todd McGuire, Program Director at 11th Hour Racing, founding sponsor of MarineShift360, says: “The new partners are already leaders in their respective fields, and joining this collaboration enables them to become leaders also in sustainability. There is no time like the present to adopt sustainability practices, both for business and environmental reasons, ensuring end-of-life considerations are embedded at the design stage. By gathering reliable data from the partners, MarineShift360 will develop a fully comprehensive database that supports a life cycle assessment tool tailored to the needs of the marine industry. Once complete, the tool will empower users to compare choices and investigate alternative materials that increase efficiency and reduce costs, leading to innovation in design – our ultimate goal for this project.”
Craig Simmons, Chief Technology Officer at Anthesis, a life cycle assessment expert who is acting as an advisor to MarineShift360, says: “Like all sectors, the marine industry needs to respond to the ‘triple whammy’ of increasingly eco-conscious consumers, the rising cost of raw materials, and a tougher regulatory environment. Design innovation sits at the heart of this, and the new LCA tool will help businesses to make smarter design choices; making better use of resources, improving efficiency and better responding to market needs.”
To find out more about the tool and the exclusive benefits of becoming a Pilot Partner please visit: www.marineshiftt360.org
All businesses in the marine industry are encouraged to provide immediate input by taking part in a questionnaire on the MarineShift360 website, which will help ensure the data and processes modelled are useful industry wide: https://marineshift360.org/questionnaire-form
